Ms. Exie Elam

“Our Crown is Stored”

“…I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, Which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - And not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” - 2 Timothy 4:7-8

Exie Leverett Elam, daughter of the late Cobbie and Amy Leverett, was born April 19, 1942, in Lincolnton, Georgia. On Monday, June 10, 2024, during the early morn raindrops, God’s presence and powerful manifestation was felt through his gentle touch as she peacefully transitioned in the comfort of her home from labor to reward.

At an early age she joined Mulberry Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, serving faithfully throughout the years in varying roles as a member of the Stewardess Board and respective President, Women’s Missionary Council, Adult Sunday School Class, and the Barbra Stokes Elam and W. H. Rucker Sanctuary Choir. She loved to sing, and as a result, she became an original and devoted member of the Lincoln County Mass Choir that traveled throughout the community spreading gospel through songs. Until her health begin to decline, she was an active participant in the Lincoln County Senior Citizen and Leisure Activity Program. Early in life, she married her sweetheart, Arthur Elam (preceded in death) and to this union, two loving children were born: daughter, Sabrina Ann Elam; and son, Arthur Bernard Elam.

Exie retired, due to her health, after many years working as a Seamstress in the textile manufacturing industry with the Thomson Company in Martinez, Georgia; the Twilight Sewing Plant and Oxford Manufacturing in Lincolnton, Georgia; Talmadge Manufacturing Company in McCormick, South Carolina; and Chardan Limited in Thomson, Georgia.

Upon graduating from Lincoln County Training School, she desired to attend college but instead opted for marriage, never fulfilling her heart’s desire. However, at the age of 72 years old, on a summer day, she announced to her beloved children and family “I’m going back to school!” After enrolling in Augusta Technical College (McDuffie Campus), it was invigorating to witness her passion to study for tests, complete assignments, write papers, and create projects during this season of her life’s journey. On May 9, 2018, what joy, as a cloud of family and friends assembled, to witness her walk across the stage of the James Brown Arena to receive her certificate diploma in Early Childhood Development. A dream fulfilled indeed!

Afterwards, she acquired a position at a local daycare center but learned soon thereafter that times of rearing children had changed and the task at hand was a little too colossal to climb. A dream fulfilled indeed! Her passion for education never faded as she encouraged and instilled in the lives of the family children she touched to do ‘good’ in school. Her favorite inquiry was always, “How is school going?”

“She was a very important part of our Family’s Tree. She will be truly missed but never forgotten!”

In addition to her parents, Cobbie and Amy Leverett, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rebecca Leverett.

She leaves behind a host of loved ones to find peace and serenity through lasting cherished memories: loving daughter, Sabrina Ann Elam of Grovetown, GA; loving son, Arthur Bernard (Walinda) Elam of Thomson, GA; grandchildren, Jayden Elam, Jasmine Demmons, Badazeon Demmons, and Dereon Hamp; devoted and loving niece, Angie Sims of Lincolnton, GA; special great-nephew, Joshua (Kodesha) Sims of Pooler, GA; great-great-nephew, Jacob Sims; sisters-in-law, Ruby (McKinley) Baker of Augusta, GA, Annie (Henry Mitchell) Elam of Charlotte, NC, and Joan (Gary) Crawford of Lincolnton, GA; brothers-in-law, J. D. (Redia) Elam, Harvey (Leverta) Elam of Lincolnton, GA, and Kenneth (Mary Ann) Elam of Evans, GA; special devoted cousin entrusting care, Patricia (Howard) Cummings; dear friends, Ollie (Rufus) Chiles, Rosezelle Elam, and Mozell Jones; and a host of caring nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and sorrowing friends
