James Lee Gartrell, Sr.

April 15, 1957 — October 21, 2024

Lincolnton

James Lee Gartrell, Sr. was born on April 15, 1957, in Lincolnton, GA, and peacefully departed this world on October 21, 2024, at his residence in Lincolnton. He was the oldest child of Mr. William and Lou Ella Murray Gartrell, Sr., who welcomed him into their family with love and hopes for a bright future.

A proud graduate of Lincoln County High School, James completed his education in 1975 before dedicating a decade of his life to serve his country in the United States Army. His service is a testament to his character, illustrating his commitment to his nation's values while showcasing the quiet strength that defined him.

James's personality was one of calmness and grace; he was known for being very quiet, laid back, and non-confrontational. This gentle demeanor made him a cherished figure among family and friends, a pillar of support who preferred to listen rather than speak, and who always radiated warmth and kindness.

Throughout his life, James pursued various hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He found pleasure in parasailing, capturing the beauty of the world through photography, and most importantly, spending quality time with his beloved family. These moments became the hallmark of who he was; as a dedicated father, grandfather, and brother, the bonds he forged with his loved ones were profound and irreplaceable.

James held a deep sense of pride in his family. He was formally married to Sharon Cummings, and from that union, two handsome sons were born — James Lee (Erica) Gartrell, Jr. and Anwar Nicholas Gartrell both of Memphis, TN. He delighted in being a father and cherished his role in guiding and supporting his boys. His legacy continues through the lives of his grandchildren: D'Angelo, Gabrielle, Jaila, Denise, and his great-grandchild, Braxton. The love he had for them was boundless, as he reveled in their individual personalities and accomplishments.

James is also survived by his brother, William (Diane) Gartrell, Jr. of Augusta, GA, along with his uncle Luther (Mary) Gartrell, of St. Paul. MN and aunt Alice Murray of Charlotte, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who each shared precious memories and laughter alongside him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, William Gartrell, Sr. and Lou Ella Murray Gartrell, and his sister, Mary Searles, who was surely waiting to greet him in the embrace of eternal love and peace.

As we gather to celebrate James Lee Gartrell, Sr., let us remember him not only for his quiet strength but also for the love he bestowed upon all who knew him.
